The analysis of production and health records can help dairy farmers and operators direct
resources to the aspects that have the greatest negative impact on the profitability of dairy
companies. The objective of this thesis is to implement analytical tools to estimate the
impact of health events on productive and reproductive performance in dairy herds in
Argentina. A database containing information about 72 commercial dairy farms from the
provinces of Córdoba, Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Entre Ríos was analysed. For the
different types of production systems, productive and reproductive indicators were
obtained through various statistical methodologies such as the adjustment of linear and
non-linear models, survival analysis, Cox proportional hazards model, logistic regressions,
as well as multivariate analysis. Some of the estimated productive efficiency indicators
were days at peak, production at peak, and the parameters associated with the adjustment
of lactation curve, taking into account the presence or absence of health events. On the
other hand, the estimated reproductive efficiency indicators were pregnancy, culling and
abortion probabilities. The indicators obtained, for each production system, were used as
income variables in a bioeconomic model aimed at estimating the reproductive cost per
cow considering health conditions. It was found that those farms that had lactations with
fewer sanitary diseases presented an extra profit per cow per year that amounted to 71.57
dollars for the freestall systems, 164.27 for those with dry-lot and 106.59 for the grazing
systems, compared to the median of the dairy farms. Finally, the procedures for obtaining
indicators of productive efficiency were also used in herds that were under automatic
milking systems with the objective of describing individual cows with contrasting daily
milk productions and interval between milkings in order to identify cows that are more
efficient.
