The subject Soil System of the second year of Agronomic Engineering
represents, for the students, the first approach to the subject ‘soil’
and it is strongly linked to subjects of higher courses. One of its objectives
is to generate the ability to classify soils. Soil taxonomy is one
of the most complex topics for students, as it uses keys with difficult
terminology. In addition, there are difficulties in integrating this with
other subject topics. Taking into account the advantages that mobile
devices offer in the teaching-learning process, we developed an application
for smartphones and new pedagogical activities in order to present
the classification to students in a more user-friendly way and facilitating
the integration between contents. The application incorporates
images, maps and an illustrated glossary, which differentiates it from
the classification resource used so far. Students highlighted the use of
the application to be simple, intuitive, fast, and innovative; besides the
organization of the information, the demonstrative images, updated
and that integrates topics. Unlike in previous years, students chose soil
taxonomy as the best understood topic and most of them think that the
application facilitated its understanding. These results are very promising
both for the teaching of soil classification and to improve the integration
between topics of the subject, looking to a more reflective,
critical and contextualized teaching-learning process, taking advantage
of the possibilities and facilities offered by new technologies.
