Abstract
Commelina erecta L. is a tolerant to glyphosate weed which has increased
in terms of frequency during recent years in Argentina. Its growing cycle coincides
with summer crops but is also present before sowing. The aim of this study was to
quantify the effect of different management practices on the growth of C. erecta
weeds and soybean crop yields. The study was conducted at INTA Manfredi,
Córdoba, during the 2010-2011 sowing season in a Entic Haplustol soil. Two
management factors were studied: inter-row spacing in the soybean crop (35cm
vs. 52cm) and different control treatments: i) Without control (weeded treatment);
ii) Total Control (manual weeding); iii) Paraquat and diuron in pre-plantation
application and glyphosate in postemergence crop; and iv) glyphosate in
postemergence crop. An initial application with glyphosate and 2-4 was made on
the whole plot thirty-five days before planting. Photosynthetically active solar
radiation intercepted by the crop was evaluated at 37, 50 and 79 days after
emergence. Biomass measurements of C. erecta were performed at 18 and 45
days after emergence. At maturity, crop yield was determined. Presence of C.
erecta did not reduce the yield of soybean. Spacing between rows did not change
weed biomass nor the crop yield. The application of glyphosate at the crop
postemergence markedly decreased the biomass of weeds.
