INTRODUCTION: In the late 1980s and early 1990s, two automated screening instruments for cervical smear analysis, Papnet and AutoPap, were introduced as a pre-screening method for conventional Pap smears to reduce the number of low-risk smears that had to be manually screened and to reduce the percentage of false negatives. Both systems were processed in extensive studies and approved by the FDA, representing the beginning of new advances in automated evaluation of cervical smears.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a mathematical algorithm with artificial intelligence methods for automated Pap test analysis, detection of otologic abnormalities, and determination of an overall test result.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study we worked with photographic images of Papanicolaou cytological smears taken from two main anatomic pathology centers in Córdoba, Argentina. An optical microscope with a digital camera was used to capture the images. The applied mathematical model uses artificial intelligence methods for:
- The morphological processing (color, texture, shape, size) and segmentation of the images for which Artificial Vision methods will be used.
- The identification of cytological abnormalities and the possibility of learning in which Machine Learning methods will be used.
RESULTS: With the application of mathematical methods, a morphological analysis of the Papanicolaou smear image was achieved. Segmenting the image, detecting each cell as a single object and differentiating the cellular elements from the smear background.
CONCLUSIONS: This method will give the option to a physician to use a mobile device to send samples and quickly receive suspicious results and at the same time allow a pathologist to teach the system and improve it.
