Due to the advances in agriculture in the semi-arid region, the intensification of livestock for meat, at their different productive stages, becomes increasingly important. Because of this situation, forage reserves development plays a strategic role, and within them, the silage. The present research work has the purpose of assessing and comparing the effect of diets based on silos of sorghum whole plant of different quality on young steers, during the process of rebreeding-termination, with nutritional changes during feeding. A trial with chopped silo of sorghum whole plant (SSPE), from the cultivation of silage sorghum plant Advanta "variety VDH 422" was performed. Three bridge silos were built; two of them remained uncovered and were slightly compacted, and the other was covered and properly compacted. Three uniform batches of 10 calves each were formed. At the first stage, each batch was subjected to a feeding treatment: SS (100% SSPE "low quality"), SSs (93% SSPE "low quality" + 7% grain soy) and SSsm (76.6% SSPE "low quality" + 7.6% soy grain + 15.8% maize grain). Subsequently, unified diet changes were implemented at three successive stages, using SSPE "low quality", soy grain, maize and NNP. In the spring, all the animals grazed alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Finally, the termination was held in confinement (90% maize grain and 10% protein core). Live weight (LW) gain was measured by weighings at 14- day intervals. Once the normal distribution of the results was checked, ANOVA and mean differences of parameters of nutritional quality and weight or metabolic size (TM) were performed at every stage. The high temperature (above 40 ° C), organoleptic characteristics (sweet smell, dark brown color), low protein content (3.67%) and high pH (5) of the "low quality" SSPE were the indicators of the restricted nutritional value. Using the NRC program, simulation of live weight gain and nutritional evaluation of diets was carried out. Greater simulated weight gain than the real gains (420 vs. 320 kg PV/w at the end of termination) and a strong deficit of PM at the initial stage (- 54.33 ± 6.29 g/an/day, average) was observed. Weaned animals affect their productive response when they are fed only with low nutritional quality SSPE. They neither change this behavior when supplemented with PB and energy. A low quality silo hinders the growth and development of weaned animals and jeopardizes future weight gains, even when they are submitted to a higher nutritional level diet.en
