Abstract
The mountainous area to the west of the city of Córdoba- Argentina is characterized by the
development of severe storms, with a significant rainfall of giant hail from 7 to 10 cm and with
a record of 17.5 cm in the city of Carlos Paz in 2018. In the present work, the characteristics of
hailstorms collected and reported from Alta Gracia in 1988 and Villa Carlos Paz and nearby
towns in 2018 are studied. In this work, we present a compilation of the first studies carried out
to identify and describe the convective cells in which giant hailstones are generated,
characterize the collected hail and correlate the temporal geolocation of the fallen hail with
remote sensor data. In the first part, the characteristics of the storms that give rise to the hail
collected and reported in Alta Gracia (1988) and in Villa Carlos Paz, and nearby towns
(February 2018) and Villa del Dique (December 2018) are studied. In the case of 1988,
traditional meteorological information is used and for the 2018 storms data from the RMA1
radar and the GOES 16 satellite. According to the analyzes performed for all these storms,
there is solid evidence that the Sierras de Córdoba play an important role in convective system
formation. In the second part the collected hail are described preliminary. For this, cuts of the
stones are made in cold chamber and thin sections are studied with visible transmission
microscopy. The giant hailstones of the storms studied bear great similarities in the type of
embryo (conical and spherical), the spongy structure, as well as the distribution of the bubble
rings. These similarities between hails collected in the area with a time span of 30 years are a
possible indicator that orographic factors prevail over climatic conditions for the formation of
these hail storms. Last, for the storm of February 2018, the results of the monitoring of the
brightness temperature core for 250K, obtained through the processing of satellite images of
GOES 16, are correlated with the recorded fallen hails. With this method the surface trajectory
of collected hail is reconstructed. In addition, it is possible to predict and identify the localities
and the time when hail should have fallen. Based on social network data, we found positive
results for four locations in the February 2018 storm. Finally, it is necessary to highlight that
these scientific studies can be carried out thanks to the collaboration of the citizens, so the
actions of citizen science implemented in the framework of the “Cordoba Hail Harvesters”
program are described in order to gather information about the hailstorms and to collect hail in
the Province of Córdoba.
