Abstract
The goals of this study were: 1) to characterize the reproductive structures of Bidens laevis, a beautiful
perennial herb which grows in freshwater wetlands, 2) to determine germination percentage of the seeds
and to describe their seedlings, 3) to research the ways of vegetative propagation, 4) to establish the better
cultural practice to cultivate this species with ornamental purpose. The germination assays, three repetitions
with 50 fruits each for treatment (handy scarified and non-scarified) and for year, were carried out with achenes collected in La Rancherita, Córdoba-Argentina between 2008 and 2011. The results were studied with variance analyses and Fisher´s LSD method. Stem cuttings (60) were obtained from mother plants collected in 2011, put in the substrate of the place where the plants grow or water, with or without powdered
rooting hormone. The germination percentage was between 14-68% without significant differences
between treatments, but with significant ones between years of crop (older seeds germinated less than
younger ones). Seedlings have phaneroepigeal germination. The survival of the seedlings was poor. On the other hand, 80-100% of the cuttings originated normal plants and they were transplanted successfully. This
is the best way for its cultivation as ornamental plant.
