Abstract
Early blight, which can severely affect tomato crops (Solanum lycopersicum L.), is caused
by several species of Alternaria spp. Control is carried out using chemical synthesis
fungicides; however, recently the search for natural alternatives, such as essential oils, has
been promoted to minimize the negative effects of the active ingredients of these fungicides.
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of essential oils of oregano
(Origanum vulgare L.) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) on the germination of tomato seeds
and the inhibition of the growth of Alternaria sp. in vitro for alternative use as Early blight
control. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the essential oils was determined
on a strain of Alternaria sp. isolated from a tomato fruit with symptoms and the Vigor and
Germinative Power of this concentration on tomato seeds was evaluated, in order to
determine phytotoxicity. MIC values equal to 1,2 mg ml-1 and 0,282 mg ml-1 were obtained
for the essential oils of oregano and thyme, respectively. It was observed that, at the
determined MICs, the essential oils did not produce phytotoxic effects on the seeds,
obtaining values of Vigor and Germinative Power similar to the control. These results
demonstrate that the essential oils tested constitute a new natural alternative for application
on tomato seeds to control Early blight.
