Peritoneal dialysis infusion into the peritoneal cavity is accompanied by an
increase in the intraabdominal pressure. This pressure increase as well as
the presence of free fluid in the peritoneal cavity can result in mechanical
complications quite typical of this technique such as: hernias, pericatheter and abdominal wall leaks, genital edema and hydrothorax.
Incidence, risk factors and pathogenesis of these problems are studied in
this chapter, being presented in algorithms to simplify the diagnosis.
Other complications such as: hemoperitoneum, pneumoperitoneum with or
without a peritonitis episode and quiloperitoneum are treated in a similar
manner. None of these subjects could be classified in level A or B
evidences.
